Have you ever glanced at your fingers, taken notice of the
rings you are wearing, and wonder where the tradition
began? Most of us know little beyond the idea that wedding
and engagement rings are used to signify a marital
relationship. However, most rings incorporate some degree
of symbolism into their design.
May be you have seen some friends of you wearing jewelry
comprised of various colored stones. More than likely, she
has children and she is wearing what is recognized as a
mother's ring. It is way of being proud of her children and
in her status as a mother. These kinds of rings are usually
multicolored and may be arranged in a multiplicity of
styles, with one birthstone that reflects the birth month
of each child.
Most of us are aware that school rings are worn to
illustrate pride in education, but these rings can
incorporate other symbolism as well. School rings may
feature various ciphers that denote involvement in
ctivities and areas of interest. Traditionally, a school
ring is worn with its insignia facing outwards only
following your graduation.
When you want to express friendship there are rings that
symbolize this special relationship. They are very trendy
among younger adults and they are traditionally worn
endlessly, wished-for as a reminder of the stable and firm
friendship they share. You can wear this kind of ring on
any finger.
Similarly, a promise ring is most often given and received
by young adults. Usually incorporating a small diamond and
worn on the left ring finger, promise rings lack the ornate
fashion and expense of a traditional engagement ring. They
are not intended to symbolize engagement, but are rather an
innocent declaration of love and commitment, nodding to the
possibility of a future together.
Progressively more fashionable, Irish Claddagh rings are
often given in friendship, love, or even used as wedding
rings. On the Claddagh rings you can observe a pair of
hands raising a heart topped with a crown, and you can read
"With these hands I give you my heart and I crown it with
my love." The ways you wear it mean different romantics
situations. So, if you wear it with the heart's point
facing outward, it means that your heart is open and that
you are romantically available. If the point of the heart
is facing inward, it means that your heart is taken; if you
wear an inward heart on the left ring finger, that
symbolizes marriage.
Certainly, all of us know the meaning of a diamond when it
is worn on the left ring finger. Typically engagement rings
are designed with a diamond on the center, for they
traditionally symbolize everlasting purity and strength and
are a sign of the wanting to be married. Engagement rings
may include other types of stones and each of them has its
own meaning. Also, wedding rings are usually worn on this
finger, as a symbol of a direct way to the heart.
You can illustrate your beliefs or symbolize your feelings
by wearing a ring. That means you will have a ring with a
particular meaning.
